You may or may not have read my blog on the rise of the alternative wedding but recently I have observed another new trend in the world of catering: the rise of the trendy work function!

Over the years, I have worked for a number of corporate companies and I am very familiar with the dreaded boardroom sandwich display. A platter of staling sarnies sits alongside a handful of crisps as we network with clients and colleagues over tuna mayo, ham and cheese and, if we are lucky, some coronation chicken. Well I am grateful to say that there are a growing number of trendy, young (and old!) companies who are rejecting this stereotype and setting up work events which will be remembered (and who doesn’t want to spring to their clients minds thanks to the fantastic time they had at your recent business lunch?!).

Does your office have a car park or even a driveway? Then leave the stagnant air-conditioned (or fan heated) atmosphere behind and breathe in some fresh South West air while you eat and mingle! Hire a foodie-pleaser street trader to park up and serve fresh, interesting and unusual cuisine, which will not only offer great conversation starters but will also leave a lasting impression on your client.

This idea doesn’t need to stop with the corporate lunch either; it is perfect for a range of staff parties. From summer picnics and fun days to company rewards or celebrations of sales achievements. We were hired by a local Bristol company who were celebrating the start of a new sales year. They wanted to create a real buzz to get everyone fired up and raring to go for the year ahead and boy did it work. Is it even possible to get the same energy in the office you spend the majority of your life in? I would argue not – a change of environment is inspiring and encourages you to think differently.

Street food hasn’t always been associated with business events or catering but I can’t think of a single reason why! The service is professional, the food is top notch and the moral-boosting opportunities amongst staff is limitless. Another example that comes to mind is a recent event where we were asked to cater at a TV studio for all the cast and crew and the atmosphere was fantastic. The staff were energized and buzzing from getting to eat something different (they were used to the standard sandwich fare) and they felt appreciated and valued as the food was brought in especially for them.

Whether it is clients or colleagues that you are catering for, your company will be rejuvenated after a quirky new eating experience. Staff morale, impressed clients or simple celebration can always, and should always, start with the taste buds! Male or female, food is the way to everyone’s heart.
